Thank you to all our volunteers and generous sponsors! The 24 Hours of Sewing event was a resounding success, with our goal of making 120 care packs for breast cancer patients met on the first day...and more than doubled for the whole event. We all look forward to doing this great event again next year! Enjoy some photos from the two days.

Volunteer Sew-A-Thon

Join Craft Land, Brest Friends and Brother Sewing Machines in supporting breast cancer awareness in Dubai! The Sew-A-Thon takes place for 12 hours each day on Friday October 21st and Saturday October 22nd at Town Center. Craft Land and ARTE artisans will be on hand for the event with surprise "portion of sale" promotions!

Here's how you can help:

Volunteers are needed for to make special cushions and bags for women undergoing breast cancer treatment; the care packs will be distributed via Brest Friends and medical networks in the UAE. We need volunteers who can use a sewing machine, but it's ok if you don't know how...we also need willing hands for cutting, stuffing, finishing etc. So mums who sew can bring along kids (or husbands or friends) who want to help too! And don't worry -- you don't need to sign up for the whole 24 hours - Sign up for as many two-hour shifts as you like!

Supplies and instruction are provided by Craft Land. Sewing machines are being donated for the event by Brother, and will be for sale afterwards with all proceeds being given to Brest Friends.

To volunteer, simply email Jennifer Haack at: or stop in to Craft Land and sign up in person. Sign up today, and encourage friends and family to join in too... All volunteers will get a goody bag for helping out, not to mention the reward of feeling great for helping someone who's going through a tough time!

Trade for Aid donations

Thank you to all who donated sewing machines and crafting supplies during our Ramadan Trade for Aid event!

This past Sunday, Jennifer and Kay delivered the donated items to Manzil School in Sharjah.
We collected and donated 8 sewing machines, a big box of yarn, a big box of tools, books patterns and so on, plus a roll of fabric. The students at Manzil were really happy to receive all the goodies, and the teacher is going to start teaching the students how to sew right away. They will be using the sewing machines for fun and profit -- we may even be able to sell some of their handmade goods in our shop in the future!

Let's Give Generously This Ramadan

Join in the spirit of Ramadan this August by donating your used sewing machine and crafting tools to the Manzil School for Special Needs in Sharjah.

This Ramadan, Craft Land is collecting used sewing machines, crafting tools and materials to donate to the Manzil School for Special Needs in Sharjah. And if you donate an old sewing machine, Craft Land will give you 10% off the price of a new sewing machine* – Craft Land’s thanks for your generosity! It's a great opportunity to upgrade to a new sewing machine, and still put an old machine to good use.

The Manzil School for Special Needs relies solely on private funding and generous donations to provide care and development to its students. The school’s main aim is to develop the students’ skills and confidence to a level that enables them to be a part of society – they call it “destination inclusion”.

Through crafting and creative activities the students learn to focus their attention and produce goods that they are able to sell, such as beaded jewellery and hand-crafted gifts. Donations of sewing machines, crafting tools and materials through Craft Land will enable the students to learn new skills and try new crafts.

So if you have an old sewing machine at the back of the cupboard, or a bunch of materials and tools you no longer use, why not have a clear out and donate them to a good cause? Craft Land only asks that all items are in good working order. For a working sewing machine, you will receive a voucher to redeem for 10% off ANY new sewing or embroidery machine at Craft Land, valid during August, 2011. You could save hundreds of even thousands of Dirhams while you help Manzil school!

Please bring items for donation into the Craft Land store where collection bins will be on display.

For more information about the Manzil School for Special Needs see

*Offer valid during August 2011 only.

Felting for Peace Around the World

Peace Felt is an initiative by Living Felt to create works of felted art and share that work with another felter somewhere else in the world.

Chrissie at Craft Land is forming a group to contribute to this worthwhile event, and she invites you to join the Craft Land group to create a felt bouquet. This completed bouquet will be given to another participating group (assigned by Peace Felt), and in theory, Craft Land's group will receive a felt project from another group somewhere out there in the felting world. Our project is designed so that the group who receives it will be able to share the bouquet among themselves, but the felted project that we may receive will be a surprise!

For this project Chrissie will be holding two free workshops and will be showing you how to make your own felt and to create and embellish felt flowers for the bouquet of love and friendship.

The first flowers for our bouquet

If you would like to learn about this ancient art and take part in this global project, come along to our two free workshops on Sunday 19th and 26th June 12.30-2.30pm at Craft Land. (Prior booking essential) Felting wool can be purchased from Craft Land before the workshops. If you have a stash of threads, buttons, beads or scraps of pretty fabric that you would like to use and/or share with your fellow crafters please do bring them along. Chrissie will also bring a selection of embellishment goodies to share.

Don't forget to book your space!

Excerpted from the Peace Felt website:

The purpose of Peace Felt is to create a borderless community of Love in Action: appreciating each other's differences while celebrating our oneness. It is about crossing over barriers, expanding our consciousness and connecting people through their passions for art and the heart felt expressions of Love, Unity, Brotherhood and Oneness that we all share.

Peace Felt Around The World celebrates the International Day of Peace as recognized by the United Nations. In 2001 the resolution 55/282 was strengthened to fix the date annually on 21 September and for it to be a day of nonviolence and cease-fire. The resolution was adopted unanimously by the Member States of the General Assembly.

For more Peace Felt information, visit their website at Just remember that if you are joining Craft Land's group, you DON'T need to register on their site. By registering at the Peace Felt site, you are committing to contribute a felted piece separately from Craft Land.
